Warli wall painting in a Kolkata home

I was pleasantly surprised to find Warli wall paintings in a house in my neighbourhood in Kolkata. The paintings were actually on the walls of the verandah as you enter the house and, as all the gates, doors and windows were shut when I was there this morning, I’m not sure if anyone lives in that house at the moment.

Anyway, as you may know, Warli paintings are a special folk art form of the ‘adivasis’ (tribals) living in the Maharashtra-Gujarat border region on the West coast of India. These simple flat graphic drawings and paintings are usually done on brown backgrounds using white colour, although variations of this art can be found as well. The paintings seem to have a rhythm of their own. What I found this morning were black drawings on white walls.

These photos were taken with my mobilephone from the street.

Durga Puja, Panditiya Road, Ballygunge, Kolkata

As I’ve mentioned in my previous post, the artistic creations and decorations in and around the Durga Puja pandals are really worth admiring. Take for instance these tribal terracotta artefacts I found in a homely Durga Puja pandal (at Panditiya Sandhya Sangha) on Panditiya Road in Ballygunge, Kolkata.
