Sketches from colonial Calcutta

Prints of sketches of buildings and street scenes of colonial Calcutta dating back to mid-19th century (and earlier) by various British artists from that period are on display at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Shangrahalaya (CSMVS) – The Mumbai Museum.

Four flights up

I was standing by the window of my living room four flights up, shaded from the midday sun by a pair of trees. Below me, people were walking or cycling down the lane; some of them protected from the summer heat by their umbrellas. I noticed a vibrant range of colours and, on a whim, decided to take a few random candid photos. Here they are:

Fountain, Alipore, Kolkata 1

At the crossing of Alipore Road and Burdwan Road in Alipore, Kolkata (Calcutta), there’s a fountain I did not know about. It features faux British/Greek/Roman-style statuary and was installed some 5 months ago – or so I was told by the people nearby. No one knew if the fountain had a name or its history (need to check on this). Anyway, here are some photos of the fountain.
